Professors call for university bandh
Professors across the state have decided to call a “university bandh” on March 21 to bring pressure on the government to resolve their long-pending demands.
The professors working in state universities are seeking the payment of the 2006 pay scale arrears from 2006 to 2009, enhancement of retirement age to 65 as per UGC regulations, the release of block grants to state universities and the filling up of vacant posts of Vice-Chancellors and Executive Committee members of various universities. The professors have decided to intensify their agitation as there was no response from the government. “We have been holding relay hunger strikes since the last two weeks in all the universities. However, there has been no response from the government. We have decided to intensify our agitation by abstaining from duties and boycotting exam duties,” said Professor B. Satyanarayana, president, Osmania University Teachers’ Association.
Prof. Satyanarayana said that even though the UGC is ready to give its share for the payment of arrears, the government has been delaying a decision on enhancing retirement age as mandated by the UGC.
